ST RONAN'S BORDER GAMES REPORT 2011.
The 184th Anniversary of the St Ronan`s Border Games took place on a warm calm day with intermittent rain showers.
First track event was the Confined race over 800 metre for the American Cup and it was Calum Caven running for home town club Leithenburn who took the tape in an excellent time of 2min 09.47sec from teammates Rian Dougal and Craig Angus.
Robbie Renwick from Peebles in his first year in competition stormed through the field in the 90 metre Juniors to claim victory in 11.64sec from Hawick`s Brodie Graham and Kazya Stevens, Moorfoot.
A home town victory followed in the 90 metre Youth`s when Ryan Laidlaw, Innerleithen just edged past Jenna Gillan, TLJT and Olivia Hood, Leithenburn in 10.24sec.
Veteran Keith Redpath , Wishaw dug deep on his reserves to deny Greg Gibson , Selkirk victory in the 800 metre Open in an exciting final straight battle with third place going to Rory Anderson , Hawick , Keith`s winning time was 1min 59.00sec
Wallace McGown , Sauchie proved too strong for Dylan Ali , TLJT and David McKay , Kelso in the 200 metre Open.
The 200 metre Junior event was a triumph for Bethany Wardhaugh , Gala Harriers in excellent style coming through from the back of the field to defeat Kazya Stevens , Moorfoot and Marshall Smith , Gala Harriers.
Darcy Graham , Hawick continued his winning streak in taking the 200 metre Youth event in 23.86sec second place went to Lewis Hunter , Pitreavie AC and Jenna Gillan , TLJT.
Kobe Stevens , Moorfoot was victorious in the 1600 metre Youth / Junior race in 4min 46.44sec coming past Ruaridh Britton also of Moorfoot on the last lap, back markers Fraser Wardhaugh , Gala Harriers, and Marc Berry , TLJT took the minor places.
Rory Anderson continued his roaring season in the 1600 metre Open snatching victory in the final straight from Gary Law , Hawick in 4min 28sec followed home by Adam Craig , TLJT and John Thomson , Coaltown.
Top marker in the New Zealand Trophy 200 metre Confined event Sam Archibald , Leithenburn made all of his start count in holding off Ryan Laidlaw , Innerleithen and Isaac Pringle , Leithenburn in 24.99sec in an exciting race.
The 110 metre Invitation event was won by Craig Gillan , TLJT, from Charles Corstairs , Lasswade AC and Lee Goodfellow , TLJT.
The day`s proceeding was brought to a finale by the 110 metre Open Sprint and it was the backmarker Craig Grieve , TLJT who broke the tape surging past Ross Weir , Hawick and Graeme Armstrong , Edinburgh in 11.31sec.
