LANGHOLM BORDER GAMES REPORT 2011.
The day started overcast with a chilly breeze but in true Langholm tradition the sun came out and truly tropical conditions ensued.
First event decided was the 90 metre Championship and Nick Smith , Shaftesbury returned to retain his crown in emphatic style in 9.61sec with Greg Turnbull , TLJT and Craig Grieve , TLJT taking the minor places.
Greg Gibson , Selkirk made up for early season disappointments in winning the 800 metre open striding past Hawick`s Ged Smith on the final lap to win in 1min 59.28sec , Graham Lister took the third place.
Ruaridh Britton , Moorfoot continued his excellent form in the Youth`s 800 metre winning in 2min 06.57sec from newcomer to the circuit Robson McKay , Nithsdale AC , Rian Dougal , Leithenburn took third place and Cameron Burnett ,Gala Harriers fourth.
The 400 metre open was an exciting finish with the four placed athletes all diving at the tape together it was Graham Lister , Kirkcaldy who was judged to have taken the tape from Andrew Thompson , Jed AC , Wallace McGown , Sauchie , and Ryan Trimby , Hawick in 52.45sec when the photo finish was consulted.
In a photo finish to the 90 metre Junior Ronan McKean , Hawick took first place in 11.68sec from Gala Harrier Marshall Smith and Daniel Elliot , Hawick the minor places were filled by Bethany Wardhaugh , Gala Harriers , Gary Goodfellow , TLJT and Barrie Mc Lean , Hawick.
Next up was the 90 metre Youth and in another photo finish it took the judges some time to split them but it was Jasmin Tomlinson , Jed AC who claimed the first prize in 10.38sec from Kerr Gerrard , Selkirk and Cameron Grieve , Jed AC also in final were Ellie Temple , TLJT, Darcy Graham , Hawick , Ryan Laidlaw , Innerleithen , and Daniel Chapman , Kelso.
Colin Welsh , Kelso strode round the tight track from the back mark in the 1600 metre open to claim victory in 4min 24.98sec Stuart Somervail , Jed AC came in second Gary Law third and Local runner Ryan Milligan fourth.
It was the back marker again claiming victory in the 1600 metre Youth`s with Joe Armstrong , Durham repeating his victory of last year in 4min 47sec Josh Abbott , Kelso , Craig Angus , Leithenburn , and Scarlet Yates , Jed AC filled the minor placings.
Betany Wardhaugh , Gala Harriers just edged it from Marshall Smith , Gala Harriers in a photo finish to the 200 metre Junior`s in 28.35sec . Rory Williams , Chirnside came third . Daniel Elliot , Hawick , Ronan McKean , Hawick , Josh Dougal , TLJT made up finalists.
Another photo finish in the 200 metre Youth followed and Jenna Gillan , TLJT just held off fast finishes from all the finalists in 24.20sec Cameron Greive , Jed AC was placed second , Daniel Chapman , Kelso third other finalists were Ryan Elliot , Hawick Kerr Gerrard , Selkirk and Jack Wilson , Hawick.
James Parker , Hawick made a return to form in the 200 metre Open winning in 21.92sec from David Hush , Hawick , and backmarker Francis Smith , Pitreavie AC.
Final event of the day was the 90 metre Open and in a photo finish it was Ross Weir , Hawick who just edged out Stephanie Common , TLJT in 9.08sec with Bruce Scott , TLJT in third Peter Denholm, Melrose, Lee Goodfellow , TLJT and Neil Armstrong , Durham made up the finalists.
