SELKIRK BORDER GAMES REPORT 2011.
On a warm but grey and overcast day with minimal wind the day`s racing got under way with T.L.J.T`s boss Bruce Scott showing his fellow team members he still has what it takes in winning the 90 metre Confined event in 9.68sec from Hawick`s Davie Grieve and Ross Weir.
Poppy Marples of Moorfoot came from the middle of the pack to win the 800 metre Youth`s in 2min 02.34sec, Fraser Wardhaugh continued his excellent form in 2nd place, Mairi Wallace and Sophie Collins both of Moorfoot taking the minor places.
Graham Lister, Kirkcaldy enjoyed his first victory on the Borders Circuit in the 800 metre Open leading home Hawick`s Rory Anderson, Gordon Eland from Broughton and Keith Redpath ,Wishaw in 1min 55.19sec.
Victory in the 90 metre Junior sprint went to Grant Goodfellow , T.L.J.T. in 11.67sec , second place was claimed by Jos Dougal , T.L.J.T. and Henry Clarkson, T.L.J.T. in third.
John Feeney followed up his team mate`s winning the 90 metre Youth`s in 9.85sec, Ellie Temple , T.L.J.T. was second and Lewis Elliot, Hawick third.
Chris Black maintained his unbeaten run since the season`s start in the 1600 metre Open but not without a fight from fast finishing Rory Anderson,Hawick the winning time was 4min 23.37sec, Adam Craig , T.L.J.T. and John Thomson , Coaltown took the minor places.
The remainder of the meeting continued in torrential rain and mention must be made of the valiant efforts of all the Officials (including the bib boy`s) in keeping the Games flowing (sorry for the pun).
Amy Armstrong, Edinburgh appeared from the pack of runners in the 400 metre Junior`s to take the now very saggy tape in 1min 05.2sec from Daniel Elliot , Hawick , Grant Goodfellow and Mairi Wallace.
From an even larger field in the Youth`s 400 metre Kyle Potts , T.L.J.T. came through in the final metre`s to win in 52.90sec from Mhairi Henderson, T.L.J.T. , Euan Pettigrew, Kelso, and Cameron Burnett, Gala Harriers.
The 400 metre Open saw evergreen Wallace McGown down from Sauchie somehow hang on to take first place in 50.66sec from backmarker Seb Harrison, Jed AC , Graham Lister, Kirkcaldy took third place and Dylan Ali, Hawick fourth.
16 year old Keiran Reilly,Edinburgh gained his first Senior win in the 200 metre open holding off David Edwards, T.L.J.T and long time leader Graeme Armstrong,Edinburgh in 22.05sec.
The day`s finale was the £1000 first prize event but in a dramatic finish the Judges were unable to split Scottish International Nick Smith,Shaftesbury Harriers ,running from Scratch, and Steven Charters,Dolphinton and the prize money was split between them. Their winning time was 11.55sec. Third place went to Connor Hedley , Ellington.
